My Back Burners

Mulling seems to be a very beneficial practice. Unconscious mulling, that is. Well, conscious unconscious mulling. You know, mulling on purpose. The project, problem, or plan at hand is stewing in unconscious juices while you are driving, cooking, and even sleeping. While your thinking mind is involved with other things, the subconscious mind is popping stuff into our conscious inboxes. If you’re lucky, you'll be listening.

Apparently, all being “lucky” takes is to just stop. To just let go. To let. To expect this box of miscellany to come back to you when it has arranged itself into something workable. Go learn Algebra, bungee jump, meditate, laugh with a friend, or go to sleep. Don’t worry about the deadline or any other thoughts of pressure to press on. Trust. Trust that while your front burners are on, your back burners are cooking things up too, and these pots never boil over because you are not watching them.

Then, when you least expect it, an idea pops into your head! Wow, that’s a great idea! It’s such a great idea that your conscious mind immediately jumps up to take credit for it. It quickly begins to scavenge around for the “how” it came to such a great solution. That’s fine. Bravo, thinking mind, bravo! You did a great job! You were smart enough to keep your eyes off that boiling pot and let it cook on it’s own.

With that, the thinking mind, with a suspect countenance, mutters, “thanks". ;)
